Fighter Squadron 3 (VF-3)
Established as Combat Squadron Four prior to 1 Jan 1922. Redesignated Fighter Squadron TWO (VF-2) (1st VF-2) on 1 Jul 1922; Fighter Squadron TWO B (VF-2B) (1st VF-2B) on 19 Mar 1923; Fighter Squadron SIX B (VF-6B) (1st VF-6B) on 1 Jan 1927; Bombing Squadron TWO B (VB-2B) on 1 Jul 1928; Fighter Squadron SIX B (VF-6B) (3rd VF-6B) on 1 Jul 1930; Fighter Squadron THREE (VF-3) (2nd VF-3) on 1 Jul 1937; Fighter Squadron SIX (VF-6) on 15 Jul 1943. Disestablished on 1 Oct 1945.

Fighter Squadron SIX (VF-6) was operating with Air Group THREE (CVG-3) and Fighter Squadron THREE (VF-3) was operating with Air Group SIX (CVG 6), the names of the two squadrons were officially  altered and VF-6 became VF-3 and VF-3 became VF-6 on 15 Jul 1943. Because the squadron number was officially changed from VF-6 to VF-3 the squadron discarded the VF-6 insignia of the shooting star and assumed the official insignia of VF-3 which was Felix the Cat.
