| NUMBERED UNITSMost of the images in this category are of Naval aviation squadron patches. These organizations can be properly referred to by three different names: 1. Formal name (e.g., Strike Fighter Squadron EIGHT SIX), which indicates the mission. (An acronym format is often used to shorten a name; e.g., STKFITRON EIGHT SIX or STKFITRON 86.) 2. Informal name (e.g., VFA-86), in which each letter has a meaning; in this case, "V" stands for fixed wing, "F" stands for fighter, and "A" stands for attack. For a complete list of these informal designations, see "Navy Squadron Designations and Abbreviations" article online. 3. Nickname – e.g., "Sidewinders." In the albums that follow, formal names are used. Informal names (in parentheses) and nicknames (in quotes) may or may not be listed. Viewers should note that all-caps numerical spell-outs in the formal names have been changed to Arabic numerals in this gallery to facilitate proper sorting. |

| SHIPSThe names of commissioned ships of the U.S. Navy all start with USS, for "United States Ship." Non-commissioned (i.e., "in-service") vessels of the Navy under the Military Sealift Command have names that begin with USNS, standing for "United States Naval Ship," and are primarily civilian-manned. A letter-based hull classification symbol is used to designate a vessel's type (see Wikipedia article "List of hull classifications" for a complete list of symbols and their corresponding meaning). If a ship's hull classification symbol has "T-" preceding it, it is a ship of the Military Sealift Command, again with a primarily civilian crew. The system of symbols has changed a number of times since it was introduced in 1907, so ships' symbols sometimes change without anything being done to the ship itself. For images in this section, hull classification symbols are listed first, followed by the names. The names of ships are selected by the Secretary of the Navy. The names are those of states, cities, towns, important persons, important locations, famous battles, fish, and ideals.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the sorting software isn't as smart as humans, it sorts by the first digit in a number first rather than looking at the entire number, so for example, DDG-19 is displayed before DDG-2 rather than after it. |

| SUBMARINESThere are two major types of submarines, attack and ballistic missile. Attack submarines (sometimes referred to as "hunter-killer" subs) have tactical missions, including locating and sinking other submarines, surface combatants, and merchant vessels. They are also used to protect friendly surface combatants and missile submarines. Some attack subs are also armed with cruise missiles, increasing the scope of their potential missions to include land targets. Some attack subs are also occasionally used for intelligence-gathering missions. Older attack subs were diesel-electric powered and used "SS" in their designations; current attack subs are nuclear powered and have "SSN" designations. Ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) primarily have the single strategic mission of nuclear deterrence by being hidden launching platforms for nuclear-armed SLBMs (originally Polaris, now Trident). However, some of these boats have been converted to launch standard (non-nuclear) cruise missiles and are designated SSGN. |
