McDonnell GAM-72 Quail
The USAF GAM-72 was the original designation for the McDonnell ADM-20 Quail, a subsonic, jet-powered, air-launched decoy missile designed to confuse enemy air defenses during bombing raids. Carried by the B-52 bomber, it generated a radar signature and flight characteristics similar to the bomber, forcing enemy air defenses to track multiple targets, including the decoys. The Quail's effectiveness diminished with advances in radar technology, and it was phased out of the Air Force inventory by 1978.
