Established as Patrol Squadron TWENTY EIGHT (VP-28) on 1 July 1944. Redesignated: Patrol Bombing Squadron TWENTY EIGHT (VPB-28) on 1 Oct 1944; Patrol Squadron TWENTY EIGHT (VP-28) on 25 Jun 1946; Redesignated Medium Patrol Squadron (Seaplane) THREE (VP-MS-3) on 15 Nov 1946; Patrol Squadron FORTY THREE (VP-43) on 1 Sep 1948, the third squadron to be assigned the VP-43 designation. Disestablished on 31 Mar 1949.

Insignia approved on 20 Sep 1946.
