McDonnell F-101B Operation BONGO II 1964
|
1964 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) project known as Operation Bongo II, which investigated the effects of sonic booms on a metropolitan area. The experiment involved flying supersonic jets over Oklahoma City eight times a day for six months. While the FAA intended to prove that the public could adapt to the noise, the program resulted in over 15,000 damage claims and significant public protest, eventually contributing to the 1971 ban on commercial supersonic flight over the continental United States.
