| UNIFIED COMMANDSA Unified Combatant Command (UCC) is a DoD command that is composed of forces from at least two Military Departments and has a broad and continuing mission. These “joint” commands are established to provide effective command and control of U.S. military forces, regardless of branch of service, in peace and war. They are organized either on a geographical basis or on a functional basis. Currently, there are nine UCCs; six have regional responsibilities and three have functional responsibilities. Some unified commands no longer exist, and two of those (US Northeast Command and Continental Air Defense Command) aren't listed below because no patches are known to exist for them. Some unified commands have subordinate unified commands under them (e.g., U.S. Cyber Command is under U.S. Strategic Command), and these are here as well, posted under the applicable unified command, as are patches for their joint staffs. |

| COMBINED COMMANDSA Combined Command is a bilateral or multilateral military organization established by treaty and comprised of the armed forces of two or more countries, usually for the protection and benefit of one or more of the signatory nations. |

| AGENCIES, FIELD ACTIVITIES, & OTHER COMPONENTSThis is the category for all the other non-Task Force joint military organizations that do not fit into any of the echelons listed above. These include agencies, field activities, direct-reporting units (DRUs), Military Assistance and Advisory Groups (MAAGs), and schools. Patches for joint bases are also posted in this section. |

| TASK FORCES, OPERATIONS, EXERCISES, & EVENTSThink of this as the “Action” section. A task force (TF) is usually created to complete a specific mission within a certain timeframe. TFs are identified by either an assigned number or name. Missions that TFs perform, both combat (wars and armed conflicts) and non-combat (e.g., non-combatant evacuation operations, or NEOs) are often named, as are large-scale exercises, and patches for these are here too. Finally, competitions such as bombing and navigation, marksmanship, and sporting events are included in this section. |

| WEAPONS SYSTEMSThe official DoD definition is: One of a limited number of systems or subsystems that for reasons of military urgency, criticality, or resource requirements, is determined by the Department of Defense as being vital to the national interest.” A dictionary definition says: “Any instrument or instrumentality used for offensive or defensive purposes, and the components necessary for its proper functioning, such as targeting and guidance devices.” In the opinion of most, this includes not only hardware and firmware, but related software as well. |

| Non-DODSome US military members are assigned to government organizations outside the Department of Defense (e.g., White House Military Office, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, etc.). Also, a great number of military who are retired from active duty, as well as former military, are “still serving” as members of one or more national veteran organizations. Those organizations that are not exclusive to just one branch of the Armed Forces are included in this section. And finally, many patches produced commercially have been purchased and worn by soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines (perhaps the best example is the POW-MIA patch). Such patches that are not service-specific are welcomed for display here. |
