Established as Marine Fighting Squadron 451 (VMF-451) on 15 Feb 1944. Deactivated on 10 Sep 1945. Reactivated in the reserves on 1 Jul 1946. Redesignated Marine Fighter Squadron (All Weather) 451 (VMF(AW)-451) on 1 Jul 1961; Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451 on 1 Feb 1968. Deactivated on 31 Jan 1997. Redesignated Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501) on 1 Apr 2010-.

Lockheed F-35B Lightning II, 2010-.

Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1) and Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501) conducted the first ever trans-Atlantic flight of the F-35B Lightning II on 29 Jun 2016 to demonstrate the capabilities of the fifth generation aircraft and participate at the Royal International Air Tattoo and the Farnborough International Air Show.
