Operation Hardtack was a nuclear weapons test program in the Central Pacific in 1958. VP-28 patrolled a large ocean area to prevent any stray ships and aircraft from wandering into the danger area and to provide early warning on shot days for all persons located within the operating area.
Operation Hardtack involved placing U.S. Naval Ships, weapons systems and instrumentation around an underwater nuclear device and then analyzing the results of the explosion. The naval assets included surface ships, small K class submarines and underwater mines.
