Marine Night Fighter Squadron 533 (VMF(N)-533) established on 1 Oct 1943. Redesignated Marine Fighter Squadron 533 (VMF-533) in May 1953; Marine Attack Squadron( VMA-533) in 1959; Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 533 (VMA(AW)-533) in Dec 1965; Marine All Weather Strike Fighter Squadron 533 (VMFA(AW)-533) in Sep 1992-.
WW-II. Embarked on board the USS Long Island (CVE-1) for the South Pacific. In May 1944, the squadron completed final training on the F6F aboard MCAS Ewa, HI and then headed for Eniwetok, Marshall Islands. On 12 Jun relieved VMF(N)-532 and assumed night defense responsibilities for the area. On 30 Nov they moved to Engebi, Marshall Islands and continued operations.
The squadron moved to Yontan Airfield, Okinawa in May 1945 and finally settled on Ie Shima on June 15, 1945. Between 14 May-29 Jun, The squadron claimed shooting down 30 Japanese planes - by radar, at night - without one operational loss.
